In view of Bach’s reputation as the most celebrated organist of his day, it is not surprising that he chose on occasion to raise that instrument above its primary continuo role in his sacred cantatas. The wellknown D minor harpsichord concerto BWV1052 was probably based on a lost violin concerto that had been transcribed for keyboard on 2 previous occasions: 1st for obbligato organ, as the opening Sinfonia with added woodwind, &, 2nd, as a harpsichord concerto (BWV1052a) thought to be arranged by his son Carl Philipp Emanuel.
